How to use this teaching resource

  • PLEASE SEE THESE IN ACTION OVER AT CHRISTMAS GRAMMAR SPINNERS
  • You or your children write in the parts of speech appropriate to your needs at the time, more examples here.
  • Basically, this is a fun activity where children spin the parts of speech to make up funny sentences.
  • Use as many or as few of the spinners as you think appropriate for your objectives and age. For example you could just use the adjectives and nouns spinners to make up funny descriptive phrases for children to put together then draw – eg. ‘hairy elves’, or as complex as ‘hairy elves tip-toe sleepily past the crackers.’.
  • Another great idea is to put the names of children from you class in the ‘nouns’ sections and work from there – the kiddies love making silly sentences using their names…(don’t forget when using singular nouns such as children’s names you will need to add the ‘s’ to the verbs…eg. pigs tip-toe, Emily tip-toes)
  • Using the ‘build a sentence’ strategy is a terrific way to incorporate this….eg..
  • Sporty

  • Sporty Emily

  • Sporty Emily tip-toes

  • Sporty Emily tip-toes quickly

  • Sporty Emily tip-toes quickly over the

  • Sporty Emily tip-toes quickly over the playground..

  • Copy the spinners onto A3 size for whole class use for modelling.
  • Don’t forget to keep the split-pin quite loose so that the arrow spins well.
  • Children decorate and /or illustrate their silly sentences – make a class big book of silly sentences for children to read in the reading corner.
