How to use this teaching resource

  • Brainstorm more science words as a class – add to list gradually.
  • Highlight and focus on using these words during science lessons – refer to the word list as discussion occurs.
  • Model and encourage children to use these words as they ‘plan’ and ‘record’ their scientific investigations –
  • eg. today we are going to observe, measure and record how long it takes an ice-cube to melt in the full sun, then compare it to how long it takes for ice to melt in the shade (chemical science).
  • What do you predict will happen and explain why? What method of recording our findings will we use? (let the children work out the best way to record findings rather than a specified sheet)
  • What materials do we need? What further questions could we ask about this chemical process – how can we explore these questions further?
  • These words really help in ‘setting the scene’ for great questioning and inquiry.
  • These words are fabulous for SYLLABLES (get clapping, stamping, place finger on chin and you can ‘feel’ the syllable change) – they are syllable heaven as their sound/spelling relationships are quite ‘true’ and the syllables are ‘clear’. Play around with these words – what patterns can the children find, circle the patterns, colour them in – make it fun.  Print off small size black and white copies to do this – see below.
  • You can make these words smaller size by using the reduction settings on your printer and just printing off black and white copies, these smaller sizes are great for cut and paste activities such as cutting out the words and pasting them in alphabetical order.
  • Make a jigsaw puzzle.  Make up a second set of cards, cut the picture section off using a zigzag or curve cut like a jigsaw (you can even cut through the word to make it more of a challenge)  Children then match the 2 or more pieces.   Also great for breaking up syllables or blends within words.
  • Ask children what they would like to find out more about – how can we do that.
  • Discuss the characteristics of a ‘scientist’.
