How to use this teaching resource

I would have a Nursery Rhyme Box which was used for independent or group work literacy activities.

• A new rhyme was introduced every 1 or 2 weeks  HERE ARE THE STEPS I USED WITH NURSERY RHYMES…..

• STEP 1.    WHOLE CLASS PLAYING WITH WORDS.…Use the larger print laminated charts to read the poem together as a class – use this time to PLAY WITH WORDS – circle sounds / letters / punctuation / rhyming words etc using whiteboard markers – have fun with this and look for all those wonderful word patterns…..

• STEP 2.   INDEPENDENT PLAYING WITH WORDS:  Print a copy of the A4 smaller version (print in grayscale if don’t want to do colour for each child) for each child.   They then circle and colour all the sounds / letters / rhyming words etc as your talk them through – they glue this into their Rhyme Books.

• STEP 3.   WHOLE CLASS RHYME RECONSTRUCTION:  Have the larger versions laminated and cut up ready to use in a whole class circle session where each child is given sentences / words – as a class – they reconstruct the rhyme one sentence / word at a time with children taking turns to come out and put their sentence / word down.

• STEP 4.  RHYME BOX LITERACY ACTIVITY  :   Place this cut up version (with the full version for reference – I would normally place one of the smaller A4 versions in with the cut up versions and keep one of the larger full charts on a wall or in a larger class rhyme book used at silent reading time ) into the Rhyme Box to be used during literacy activity time.
