How to use this teaching resource

  • Use the words for examples of phonics – Match with Phonics Charts
  • Make mini copies of these words for children to become ‘word detectives’ and play with the laminated words – circling, colouring phonics etc. These smaller sizes are great for cut and paste activities such as cutting out the words and pasting them in alphabetical order.
  • Great as a first week back to school activity.
  • As a class – or in small groups – visit all the different areas of your school. Take the Around the School Words with you and if you like and label each area as you visit.
  • When you arrive at each area – discuss with the children all the things they can see, what happens there etc
  • Come back to the classroom and review the places the children visited around the school using the words as a guide – brainstorm more words….
  • Children draw a map of the school – labelling each area as they draw.
  • Copy the At School concept book onto A3 and make up a class big book with each area having 1 or more pages.
  • Children then illustrate a page each – this then goes into the class big book sharing area….
  • You can make these words smaller size by using the reduction settings on your printer and just printing off black and white copies, these smaller sizes are great for cut and paste activities.
  • When not being used on a wall display, place them in labelled boxes, or hanging pockets for continued use and reference.
