On the first day of kindergarten, I talk with the children about rules. I ask them to think of good rules.
We write down all of the rules they come up with. Sometimes I have to hold back my chuckles, they can come up with really good, really funny rules.
This year the class was very specific, suggesting rules like, “no kickboxing,” and, “no taekwondo.”
I then read the rules aloud and we sort them into 2 groups: rules about keeping your hands & feet to yourself & rules to do with what one does at school (raise hand to speak etc.)
We condense all of the rules into 2 – Be kind & Do what you need to do. I write these 2 rules on poster paper, we all raise our right hands and promise to follow these rules, and everyone signs the paper.
I then post it in a prominent spot and refer to it often. We’re 6 weeks into the year and haven’t had any problems.
We have just been inserviced on the discipline strategies of 123 MAGIC. Having this as a whole school discipline policy all our rules are written out and placed on a traffic light then each child has a peg with their name on it. When discipline is required we count them and move their peg to the first light or 1 when they do not do the right thing the peg is shifted all the way up to the red light and it is ‘time out’ for 5 minutes. This is for difficult classes because positive is always best.
Is there a system out there that works for Kinder where you don’t have to post the names on anything? To try and keep the consequences between you and the student and not be put on public display?
