Capital letters and full stops

    This is a pretty simple idea, but I was finding that my kindys were forgetting to use capital letters at the start of their sentences, and full stops at the end.

    I use a traffic light system for behaviour management, so I am now letting the children use a green pencil (green for go) for the first letter of the first word in their sentence, (which is a capital letter).

    They then do a red full stop at the end of the sentence (stop). I only introduced it in week 9, but even just over those last 2 weeks of term I noticed a change.

    It also helps that I model it in my writing when we are doing joint construction or modelled writing using the Smart Board, and I make a big deal out of it and pretend to ‘forget’ to do them every now and then and the kids love to remind me.

    What a great idea to remind students about capital letters and full stops. I am having the same problem with some of my students who are R-2! I have just made up a laminated ‘My Writing Chart'(A5)for each student to have on their desk. The idea is for it to be used every day with each writing activity. It has velcroed red ticks that children take off from the bottom of the chart and put next to each dot point when the teacher thinks they have achieved that task. The Chart reminds children to do such things as rule up their page, remember capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, not to press too hard with their pencils, keep letters small and on the lines etc. However, the visual of coloured red and green writing will be a great success and I will try it tomorrow!     I love this idea. What a great way to reinforce these important concepts. A really good visual for childen always helps I think. Not to mention how happy they are to be able to add colour to their writing!
    If you could see improvement in two weeks it sounds like a winner to me!

    To add to the traffic light. We were using the orange light as a conjunction or connective word to expand their sentences into compound and complex sentences. We started by giving them one word to expand their sentence then later made a list of possible orange light words.
