This year I found a core group of kids with very poor fine motor skills. We couldn’t get any more extra help for these kids so I organised a parent fine motor group to work in my class.
I asked for any interested parents in my class newsletter. I was fortunate enough to have 4 parents keen to help out. One parent even could help out twice in the week.
I then organised a basket of resources. I also organised a folder of basic activities and sight word sheets to help the group. The parent would come and help out when they were able, and picked up the basket and took the small group to the library to do some basic sight word practice and then “make” something, with some cutting and pasting, or play dough to get those little hands moving.
The parents love having direction, and getting to know the 5 kids that they take each week. It didn’t matter if the parent couldn’t help out on the day as the next parent could pick up the folder and just do the next activity.
The parents have also got a communication book going, where they jot down any thing that is interesting or things that worked or didn’t. This has been fantastic set up as the parents are really independent and are really helping those kids that need it.
